How do I connect to the Internet?
Most connection problems can be corrected by resetting your equipment and then restoring power to each device in order.
If you are using the Motorola SBG900 wireless gateway, simply disconnect the power cable from the back of the unit for 30 seconds, then restore power and wait for it get online with solid lights for Power, Receive, Send and Online. The Wireless light will then be blinking to indicate it is providing a wireless network. Restart your computer, open your wireless connection software and reestablish the network with the Motorola SBG.
If you are using a Linksys wireless router with a cable modem, disconnect the power to the cable modem and router, and leave both unplugged without power for at least 30 seconds. First, restore power to the cable modem and wait for it to get online. If you are using a Motorola SurfBoard modem, this will be indicated by solid lights for Power, Receive, Send and Online. On most other modems, this will be indicated by a solid light for Cable.
Next, restore power to the Linksys wireless router and wait for it to gain the internet connection from the modem. Once the power light and the Wireless-G / WLAN light are solid, the router is online and providing a wireless network connection. Finally, restart your computer. Open your wireless connection software and reestablish the network with the Linksys router. What if I can't establish the wireless network?
If you have restarted the modem, router and computer, but the computer does not show your wireless network as available, you will need to connect one computer directly to the router, or to the Motorola SBG, to correct this.
First, run an ethernet cable from the network port on your computer to the equipment. In the case of the Motorola SBG there is one ethernet port for a connection, while the Linksys router has ports numbered 1-4 that can be used. Next, open a web browser on that computer, such as MS Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Apple Safari. Click in the address bar of the browser and enter http://192.168.100.1/ if you are using the Motorola SBG, or http://192.168.1.1/ for the Linksys router. When prompted, enter the username and password of "waveadmin" (no quotes) and a password of your six-digit account number*, unless you have reset the device to its default settings, or decided to change the login information.
On the Motorola SBG, click on "Wireless" on the left column, then select the "Network" tab. Change the "ESSID" field to something else, perhaps by adding a number to the existing name. Make sure "Channel" is set to 11, then click "Save Changes".
For the Linksys router, click on the "Wireless" tab and then on "Basic Wireless Settings". Change the "Wireless Network Name (SSID)" to something else, perhaps by adding a number to the existing name. Make sure that "Wireless Channel" is set to 11, then click "Save Settings".
Disconnect the ethernet cable from the computer, and restart once more. Open your wireless connection software and look for a network with the new name. If you are using WEP or another form of wireless security, you will need to enter the security key to connect.
Can I configure the wireless security of the network?
You will need to connect one computer by ethernet cable to the ethernet connection on the Motorola SBG or the Linksys router, then go to the admin control panel and log in, as per the description above.
If using the Motorola SBG, click on "Wireless" in the left column, then select the "Security" tab. For the Linksys router, click on the "Wireless" tab and then on "Wireless Security". You can then select any of several encryption methods for your wireless connection. The installer will set up WEP as a default, but if you prefer another method you are welcome to configure it according to the User's Guide for the equipment you are using.

Can I configure the firewall of the network?
First, connect one computer by ethernet cable to the Motorola SBG or the Linksys router, then log into the admin panel, as described above.
For the Motorola SBG, click "Firewall" in the left column. On the Linksys router, click on the "Security" tab and then on "Firewall". You can then configure the firewall protection on the router, to block any ports you do not wish available for incoming or outgoing connections.
What should I do after reinstalling Windows, or restoring my computer to a previous date, and I need to set up my wireless network again?
If you are running Windows XP, your computer will automatically install all of the drivers and other software you need to access your wireless network. After your install or restore, you should be able to open your wireless network connection and connect to the network, although you will need to reenter any security information, such as a WEP key.
If you are running a previous version of Windows, insert the setup CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive. In most cases, the setup wizard should run automatically once the CD is loaded. If the setup wizard does not run automatically, click on the "Start" button and select "Run". Type "D:\setup.exe" into the "Run" field and click the "OK" button, unless your CD-ROM drive is identified by another letter other than D.
After following the steps in the setup wizard, open the wireless network connection and connect to the network, using any security information necessary, such as a WEP key.
How do I reset the wireless equipment to default settings?
In the case of both the Motorola SBG, and the Linksys router, there is a reset button recessed behind a pinhole on the back of the device. You will need a paperclip to hold down the reset button.
For the Motorola SBG, hold down the reset button until all the lights on the front of the device go out, then release the button and it will go through its connection cycle. You can then go to the administrative screen at http://192.168.100.1/ and use the default username and password of "admin" and "motorola" (no quotes).
For the Linksys router, hold down the reset button for at least 10 seconds, but you will want to make sure you do not hold down the button for 30 seconds or more, and then release. You can then go to the administrative screen at http://192.168.1.1./ and use the default username and password of "admin" and "admin" (no quotes).
